5 Reasons Why Couples Who Sweat Together, Stay Together!

COUPLES SPOTLIGHT: LAURA IOSUE & ANDREW SALTER

Fitness can be about you or it can be about you and your partner. Why not share this healthy aspect of your lives and discover how doing so, might give your relationship a new dimension and a new life!

Here are 5 REASONS why you should train with your partner:

1. INCREASE HAPPINESS

Studies show that after jointly participating in a physical challenge, couples report feeling more satisfied with their relationships (Aron, Norman, Aron, & Heyman, 2000).

Exercising with your partner also allows you to work on your communication. Preventing a barbell from crashing down on them when pushing out one last rep, provides an opportunity to work on your communication skills as a couple. Training together can help couples vocalize emotions and provide feedback and encouragement.

2. INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY

Long-standing concept in social psychology is that the mere presence of someone else affects your ability to do an activity (Zajonc, 1965). Being around your partner will give you an extra energy boost!

Plus it can be tempting to skip a workout when you’re tired, but knowing that someone you care about is relying on you should help get you off the couch and to the gym.

3. BE MORE ATTRACTIVE

Showing your partner your physical effort is likely to boost your attractiveness in his or her eyes!

4. ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

A recent study showed that average-weight husbands who care about fitness, engage in more physical activity when their wives offer more supportive health-related comments (Skoyen, Blank, Corkery, & Butler, 2013).

5. INCREASES EMOTIONAL BOND

When your training rhythm matches your partner’s pace, you create non-verbal or mimicry (Stel & Vonk, 2010). Non-verbal mimicry helps people feel emotionally attuned with one another, and those who engage in it, tend to report greater feelings of having “bonded” with their partner.

Whether you’re tossing a medicine ball back and forth, trading dumbbells between sets or spotting one another, exercising together provides an opportunity to develop this connection.

By working out with your partner, you will both be working towards building a better mind and body AND you get to spend quality time together.
